Display and OpenGL Drivers

Geforce1 & Geforce2 Range
If you are running a Detonator driver set before 6.50 then ignore this section as many of the tweaks have not been tested. Download and install any Detonator driver set 6.50 or above. Under the display properties in OpenGL disable anti-aliasing, disable vsync and enable fast trilinear support. If you are running in 16bit display depth for OpenGL then select alternative depth buffer to help with 16bit z buffer artifacts. If you wish to tweak outside of the options available in the standard display panel then download a Geforce tweak utility such as NVMAX or the excellent Rivatuner. More tweaks can be found in the Framerate and Visual Tweaks section.

3DFX Voodoo Range

The latest Voodoo3/4/5 drivers have beta HSR and Guardband support which may help with framerates if you are not CPU limited. Make sure you download the latest driver for your card. Voodoo3 Windows9x drivers 1.04 and later correct the major slowdown problem when running at very high texture detail and provide hardware gamma support at all settings. Voodoo3 Windows9x drivers before version 1.03.05 have Alpha blending slowdown problems so avoid those if possible. If you have a fast Intel CPU, 850 Pentium III or above then the Wicked3D 'high resolution' version will perhaps give better results than the standard Wicked3D driver. Make sure you install the latest Wicked3D driver when you are using a Voodoo4 or Voodoo5 or you will lose large texture support

Wicked3D OpenGL Setup Information.
Use this section if you wish to use and install the Wicked3D OpenGL driver.

If you install a Wicked3D driver that is before version 2.02 when you are using a Voodoo4 or Voodoo5 you will lose large texture support. Keep or install whichever Banshee, Voodoo2 or Voodoo3 drivers you prefer. If you have an Intel CPU and 3dfx card then download Wicked3d OpenGL, from version 1.08 onwards registration is no longer required and it has full support for Windows2000. AMD CPU users will not get as great a benefit from Wicked3D OpenGL as Intel CPU users, however in nearly all cases the Wicked3D driver is much faster in Tribes2 than any 3DFX OpenGL.

Install the 'standard' WickedGL to the relevant Tribes2 directory, do not use the 'high resolution' version unless you are running at 1024x768+ and/or have a fast Intel CPU - 850 Pentium III or above. If you have a Voodoo3/4/5 then select 'display properties' and 'advanced features' then under 'OpenGL' select 'fast' or 'faster' for 'Depth Precision' and disable 'MIP map Dithering'. No matter which 3dfx card you have, if possible disable 'vsync' as you will find FPS rates much smoother with regard to FPS drops.  If you do wish to run with vsync enabled then enable 'Triple Buffering'.  NOTE: Even if your Voodoo driver set supports HSR / Guardband setting it is not currently supported in the Wicked3D OpenGL driver. More tweaks can be found in the Framerate and Visual Tweaks section. Note that palletized textures under Wicked3D OpenGL can cause problems with colours and/or textures so try 16 bit or 32 bit texture setting(palletized texture issues submitted by Eric Hughes)

3dfx OpenGL Setup Information.
Use this section if you wish to use and install the 3dfx OpenGL driver.

If you have a Voodoo2 and an AMD CPU then backup your old fxmemmap.vxd file in windows as the one installed by the new drivers may cause problems. Simply copy the backup fxmemmap.vxd file over the new one if you do have problems. If you have a Voodoo3 or Banshee make sure you download the latest driver.

If your Voodoo driver set supports HSR / Guardband setting and you have a fast CPU then see if enabling one of those settings improves framerate. Do not enable both HSR and Guardband, only HSR or Guardband. More tweaks can be found in the Framerate and Visual Tweaks section.

3dfx Direct3D Setup Information.
Use this section if you wish to use the 3dfx Direct3D driver.

If you have a Voodoo3/4/5 then select 'display properties' and 'advanced features' then under 'Direct3d' disable 'MIP map Dithering', experiment with the 'Z-buffer Optimization' setting and if you've an AMD Athlon/Duron or Intel Pentium3/4 make sure that 'Geometry Assist' is enabled. More tweaks can be found in the Framerate and Visual Tweaks section.
