Slowdown
The multiplayer tweak config,
the description for r_lightDetailLevel which can help with slowdown
on CPU limited systems and connection tweaks
sections should be of help.
CD/DVD Key
First be sure to check that you have entered the CD/DVD Key
correctly. The length of the key is usually 20 letters|numbers, for
example Y3K4-KAUQ-LA3R-0N5I-51HT and should be entered
into Quake4's CD key menu in lowercase.
Check that the CDkey is being written to the quake4key file correctly, the file can be found
in your q4base directory. If it is not you can create it manually, in the example shown
replace yourvalidkeyhere with your key and save it to a file called quake4key in your
q4base directory. You may wish to write protect the key so it cannot be deleted.

If you play mods and have a file called quake4key in directories other than
baseq4 then try
deleting them.
Firewall / Network Sharing / Router
Do you use network sharing software such as Winroute? If so check that the sharing
software is configured for NAT mode.
If you have a firewall then make sure you have opened the Quake4 authentication server and
utility server ports 27650, 27651 and 27652 as well as the default game ports 28004 to
28021 for both TCP/IP and UDP/IP.
If you have a router for your ADSL or Cable connection then try disabling
Stateful Packet inspection (SPI) and/or enabling Gaming Mode in your router.
Master / Authorisation servers
Can you resolve the id software master/authorisation server at
q4master.idsoftware.com using tracert
q4master.idsoftware.com ? If you
cannot then check that your lmhosts or hosts file in the windows directory has not been altered
and is redirecting requests that should go to id software's master/authorisation server. It can
also be the case that routing is redirecting requests, check the routing
table in your firewall. You can also try adding the IP address of id software's
master/ authorisation server to your autoexec.cfg or editing it in the
file called quake4config.cfg

Quake4 Cracks / Hacks
Have you modified the Quake4.exe executable? Some no CD patches cause problems with
multiplayer, replace the quake4.exe file with the original untouched
quake4.exe from the
latest patch.
Dialup ISDN and CD Key Timeout
If you have are on a dialup connection such as ISDN, played on a server less than 5 minutes ago and you have
redialled your ISP wait a few minutes before trying the server again. Your IP address is
tied to the CDKey for a short time, the timeout being around 5 minutes.
Punkbuster
Quake4 also has the anticheat monitor called Punkbuster, if
you are playing on a Punkbuster server make sure that Punkbuster is
enabled. If you did not include Punkbuster at installation time then
simply copy the folder pb from the setup\data folder on your
CD/DVD to Quake4's q4base directory on your harddisk
If you are being kicked by Punkbuster for PB Client Not Responding, PB
INIT FAILURE or General PB Client Authentication Failure and have
a router for your ADSL or Cable connection then try disabling Stateful
Packet inspection (SPI) and/or enabling Gaming Mode in your router.
Other
If all else fails try another ISP if you can as some block the IP address and/or ports to stop online gaming.
