Unreal Tournament Connection Tweaks

There are not many tweaks available in Unreal Tournament, however you can at least monitor your connection and alter your data rate as needed in game and across servers. In Unreal Tournament gameworld updates to the server are directly tied with a clients FPS. It is important to find a compromise that gives you high FPS without saturating your upstream bandwidth. These commands can be entered at the console which is usually accessed using the TAB key. In addition to the network tweaks you may wish to set your minimum FPS in the video menu so that you reduce player 'warping' problems when online. Thank you to Danzanti6 for feedback, although it was mentioned in the netspeed command description the suggested settings table now includes upper and lower netspeed settings for all connections. I suggest that keys are assigned to toggle between them.

This guide only covers connection tweaks, if you are looking for a comprehensive guide to Unreal Tournament make sure you visit The Borg's Guide to Unreal Tournament.

stat net This command will show you ping, packetloss and packet upload/download etc. information in the top left corner of your screen. Use the information displayed to adjust your netspeed, too high a netspeed will show as high ping variance and possibly packetloss. Useful when assigned to a key as it can easily be toggled on and off as needed.

netspeed value Edit this value only if you are having problems with the default settings for your connection type. Controls the network data rate for your connection, you usually set this via the network option in the game menu. However the settings are 'safe' and can be tweaked a little more should you be experiencing problems. A Stac/Microsoft compressed connection can be run at a higher netspeed than usual. I suggest that you assign keys to alter your netspeed as needed. Example, for 56K modem with Stac/Microsoft compression you may wish to assign keys to netspeed 5000 and netspeed 3000 so that you can choose in game which is best suited to your current connection.

Suggested settings are in the table that follows. They are however guidelines, adjust them as needed by monitoring your connection using stat net and alter netspeed setting based on its information. The table includes upper and lower settings, it is strongly suggested that you assign keys to toggle between them.

If you are using voice communication programs such as RogerWilco, Battlecom, Teamsound etc. then please adjust settings accordingly. Allow 1024 bytes for downstream and 512 bytes for upstream usage by the voice communication program..
