Rockwell/Conexant Chipset Based Modems
Modems known to use Rockwell/Conexant chipsets are Diamond, Supra, Zoom, Pace Modular
Technology, Elsa, Tashika, Hayes, Dynalink, Motorola Surfer, Mr.Modem, Multitech and many
others. Before using these strings it is very important to know what type of compression
you are using for your dial up connection. The compression will be one of two types, the
modems internal compression or the more efficient Stac/Microsoft compression. See the Optimizing a modem based dial-up connection section for
information on where to enter strings and how to enable Stac or Microsoft compression.
Make sure that you have flashed to the latest v90 code which is available from your Modem
manufacturers site. If you do not know the modem manufacturer then look for a FCC-ID or
BABT-ID and search for the manufacturer with that code at the FCC-ID or BABT
site. If you still cannot find the modem manufacturer then look for identifier information
as described at the 56K
site. You can download technical manuals (manual one
and two) with all register settings just in case you
wish to tweak with your own values. Some ISP's support K56FLex and V90 so see which of
those standards suits your ISP, modem and phone line conditions.
NOTE: We have included many variants on strings suitable for various
Rockwell/Conexant chipsets and flash revisions. To identify which variants can be used
with your modem either test them in turn or use a communications package such as
Hyperterminal and set it up to communicate with the modem. Enter AT+MS=? at the prompt and
a syntax template will be shown. Compare the template shown with those listed in italics
just under the variant heading. There are so many variants of Rockwell/Conexant hardware
be it due to flash or hardware revisions that should the guide not list a suitable string
we suggest you email us with the template or try
to identify your modem and use the instructions on the modem manufacturers website. Our
thanks to Ben Kennish for the Variant Four template.
V90 - No Speed Limit Capping
These strings will allow your modem to connect at full speed and disable the modems
internal compression if you are using the more efficient Stac or Microsoft compression in
the DUN. See the Optimizing a modem based dial-up connection
for information on where to enter strings and how to enable Stac or Microsoft compression.
These strings are usually stable for gaming, however unlike the speed limit strings the
modem will sometimes retrain/fallback. This usually occurs in the first 5-10 minutes of
connecting and rarely after that. Select the correct column for your compression type and
then one of the strings from the column.

V90 - Speed Limit Capping
These strings will force your modem to connect at a capped speed in order to help stop the
majority of retrains and speed shifts that cause phone jacks. They also disable the modems
internal compression if you are using the more efficient Stac or Microsoft compression in
the DUN. See the Optimizing a modem based dial-up connection
for information on where to enter strings and how to enable Stac or Microsoft compression.
These strings are very stable for gaming as they have a speed limit in place which means
that the modem will not usually retrain/fallback at all. Connect to your ISP as usual and
note the connect speed, find the next lowest value from the Rockwell/Conexant v90 Upgrade
Speed Cap Limiter Values table below and add the numeric value in place of the xxxxx in the string. Example if you are
connecting at 45333 then place 42667 in the xxxxx
section of the string which will force connects to 42667 or below. If you still have
problems try one step lower, in the example this would be 41333. Select the correct column
for your compression type and then one of the strings from the column.
